World No. 1 Zhang Yining of Beijing turned Monday the table around by winning
the last three sets to beat world Grand Prix paddler Wang Nan of Liaoning 4-3 in
the table tennis women's singles final at the 10th Chinese National Games.
Zhang, who lost 3-2 to Wang after leading by 2-0 in the finals of last
version of the tournament in 2001, took the revenge with a6-11, 11-6, 8-11,
6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 victory.
"I lost the first set and trailed in the game. And I came back to win the
game. It's almost a typical game in the Games. I didn't feel depressed when
trailing 3-1," Zhang said.
"I'm not upset. It's a perfect game," said the 26-year-old Wang."I've played
like this for over a year. This is the best tournament for me for the past 2-3
years."
Rumors said Wang would retire after the Games due to her disappointing
performance after crashed out of the singles quarter-finals at last year's
Athens Olympics.
"I'll play for my club at the Super League after the Games. I have no
decision (on retirement)," Wang said.
Wang took a quick lead at 3-1 and a slight lead on the fifth set. Zhang held
onto her power strikes to level the game.
Tying at 7-7 in the seventh set, Zhang won two crucial points to make it 9-7
and the first singles gold medal at the Games.
