Qin Wangping put women's 100m Asian record holder Li Xuemei's dynasty to an end as the local woman added the national title to her Asian champion at the 10th Chinese National Games in Nanjing yesterday.

Li, 28, has dominated the race since 1997 when she set a surprise Asian record of 10.79 seconds in the eighth National Games. She also took the gold in the ninth edition four years ago in Guangzhou and represented her country to compete in the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games.

But Li, now a successful businesswoman in her hometown, saw a new era come when Qin, who was crowned as Asia's fastest woman in last month's Asian Championships, took over the reign at home.

The 23-year-old Qin clocked a modest time of 11.34 seconds for the title. Followed by Liu Li from Heilongjiang and Chen Lisha took the silver and bronze at 11.51 and 11.55 seconds respectively.Li failed to reach the final.

"I just tried my best in the final today and the home crowd encouraged me a lot," said Qin. "I could not allow myself losing face in the home field."

In the men's race, Guangxi's Gong Wei beat reigning world universiade champion Hu Kai to become China's fastest man. The 26-year-old clocked 10.24 seconds for the title, while his teammate Pang Guibin took the bronze medal in 10.32.

Hu Kai, nicknamed the "Man with Glasses" after he surprised theworld by winning the men's 100 meters last August in Turkey at the World University Games, settled for the silver in 10.31.

World men's table tennis number one Wang Liqin completed a golden double in the Games, using only 25 minutes to win the men'ssingles gold medal by crushing Olympic silver medalist Wang Hao from the Chinese Army 11-3, 11-1,11-6, 11-5.

In the earlier women's doubles final, Shandong's Peng Luyang/LiXiaoxia defeated Tianjin's Li Nan/Tang Na 12-10, 11-13, 11-5,11-3,11-7.

"I felt really good on the first two sets. I did a good job striking first to take the control of the ball. But the results are not Wang Hao's real game," said Wang Liqin, who won the men's doubles on Monday.

Former Olympic shooting champion Zhang Shan made a remarkable comeback from retirment as she secured her first National Games gold medal in the women's skeet since 1993, a year after she shot down China's first clay target Olympic title in Barcelona in 1992.

The 37-year-old started the final with 72 hits, two hits ahead of her closest rival Shi Yanhong from Beijing, and had 24 out of a possible 25 to win with a total score of 96 hits.

Zhang also equaled the world record of event set by French Veroniqu Girardet-Allard at the Lonato World Shooting Championships in 2005.

"I was not nervous then. I had won everything. I would lose nothing if I lost today's final," said Zhang. "If I am in good shape in 2008, I will strive for second Olympic gold, but before that, I have plenty of things to do."

Ouyang Kunpeng highlighted the day's swimming competition as heset a new Asian record in men's 200m backstroke and won his second gold medal following his 100m win.

But Luo Xuejuan, who won the first swimming Olympic gold for China in eight years at Athens from the women's 100m breaststroke, suffered an upset defeat in the women's 200m.

Ouyang, 23, clocked one minute 57.91 seconds for the gold, 0.81seconds faster than the previous mark.

Chinese Army swimmer Qi Hui prevailed in the duel against Luo to win her third gold in two minutes 22.14 seconds. Luo, the 100m champion earlier, was second 2.36 seconds behind Qi.

"It was my honor to stand on podium with Qi Hui at nationals. We are so familiar with each other and also know each other well,"said Luo, also five-time world champion gold medallist. "I did notthink the lane two is a problem for me because I had the experience in lane one before."

In the weightlifting competition, Olympic champion Shi Zhiyong of Fujian finished second in the 69kg category. Shi, gold medalistin 62kg division in Athens, had a snatch of 157.5 and a jerk of 185kg for a total of 342.5kg.

Shi Zhiyong, 25, upgraded his category to the 69kg division after the Athens Games and the result at the National Games increased his confidence.

Li Zhihong of Guangdong won the gold medal as he lifted a totalweight of 345kg, and Chen Chufu, former world champion, followed by Shi at 342.5kg due to heavier bodyweight.

"It is a surprise to win in the National Games. It's my honor to compete with Olympic champions and world champions. I am so lucky today," Li said.

Zhang Guozheng, the 31-year-old Olympic champion in 69kg class, could not keep his monopoly in domestic arena as he failed the lifts in jerk and finished the competition without results.

Li Hongli of Guangdong won the gold medal in the 77kg division as he met no challenge in the competition as he lifted 170kg in the snatch and hoisted 197.5kg in the jerk to win the gold medal at 367.5kg.

In the other track and field events, men's long jump was surprisingly won by Tianjin's Zhang Xin on 7.99 meters as the 26-year-old Zhou Can of Hunan, whose personal best of this year is 8.05m, 0.35 meters short of the national and Asian mark set by Lao Jianfeng from Guangdong in 1997 national games, failed to make thefinal with a disappointing 15th finish on 7.30m.

Defending champion Song Aimin was dethroned in the women's discus throw competition when Li Qiumei from Shanxi won the title with 64.89m.

The competitions of men's 400m ran in gear, as this year's national champion Wang Liangyu won the race after timing 46.12 seconds.

Former Asian champion Ye Kuigang from the Chinese Army defendedhis title of men's hammer throw with a mighty throw of 73.04m, while national record holder Liu Feiliang got across a height of 5.60m to take the victory in the men's pole vault.
