Upstarts cramed the track and field of the 10th National Games in the day two competition of the athletics tournament as big names missed titles here on Tuesday.

In the women's 100 meters hurdles, Liu Jing from Sichuan upset Asian champion Su Yiping of Jiangsu and Asian Games title holder Feng Yun to take the title in 12.96 seconds.

The battle of fastest man in the National Games was also won bya long silenced veteran Gong Wei of Guangxi who ruled out reigning world universiade champion Hu Kai for the men's 100 meters gold medal.

Gong, 26, who firstly established his name to China's track in the 8th edition of the games after finishing the bronze medalist eight years ago, clocked 10.24 seconds to beat Hu Kai on an edge of 0.07s, while his teammate Pang Guibin, 22, took the bronze medal in 10.32.

The 23-year-old Hu Kai wearing glasses surprised the world by winning the men's 100 meters in August in Turkey at the World University Games with timing 10.30s. His personal best is 10.27s.

Men's long jump was surprisingly won by Tianjin's Zhang Xin on 7.99 meters as the 26-year-old Zhou Can of Hunan, whose personal best of this year is 8.05m, 0.35 meters short of the national and Asian mark set by Lao Jianfeng from Guangdong in 1997 national games, failed to make the final with a disappointing 15th finish on 7.30m.

Defending champion Song Aimin was dethroned in the women's discus throw competition when Li Qiumei from Shanxi won the title with 64.89m.

The competitions of men's 400m ran in gear, as this year's National champion Wang Liangyu won the race after timing 46.12 seconds.

Former Asian champion Ye Kuigang from the Chinese Army defendedhis title of men's hammer throw with a mighty throw of 73.04m, while national record holder Liu Feiliang got across a height of 5.60m to take the victory in the men's pole vault.

Women's 400m hurdles sensation Huang Xiaoxiao from Shandong breezily won the women's 400 meter race, and the top finisher in qualification round Qin Wangping of Jiangsu powered to victory in the women's 100 meters race.
