Ruan Juanfa of Jiangxi jerked up a decisive 217.5kg to claim the men's weightlifting 94kg title at the 10th National Games in Yangzhou on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Ruan came out from nowhere to lift 217.5kg on the sixth attempt, 15kg more than his fifth lift, to hammer down the gold medal.

Wang Hailong, who also made a total result of 387.5kg, concededto the second place due to body weight disadvantage. Sun Weiyi, won the bronze at 382.5kg.

After Wang and Sun completed their last lifts respectively, Ruan, bronze medalist in the 9th National Games, took a risk by asking a barely-lifting 217.5kg and he made it. His coach Liu Yiwurushed onto the arena and hugged him tightly.

"I took the risk in the last lift because my coach encouraged me. He said, 'your advantage is jerking, so why don't you have a try?' I am so happy that I won," Ruan told the reporters.

"Ruan lifted the weight in the past and once beat Sun Weiyi in 2003. I thought it was worthy to take the risk of the last attempt," coach Liu Yiwu said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Yuan Aijun of Jiangsu successfully defended his national title after winning the men's weightlifting85kg division.

The 28-year-old Yuan, who finished fourth place in last year's Athens Games, hoisted 172.5kg and jerked up 207.5kg for a winning total of 380kg, 7.5kg more than his result in Athens.

Yuan tried to better the jerk word record of 218kg by hoisting 220kg in his last lift, but failed.

"I wanted to give a surprise to the home fans, but it was a pity I failed," Yuan told the reporters.

"I was nervous while competing in front of the home crowd. Actually, I did not perform my best in the competition."

Lu Yong of Guangxi, 19, won the silver medal at 377.5kg, and Huang Zhong of Sichuan, 20, was third at 370kg.

"These two young guys have great potentials and you can say they are huge threats to me. However, they can also motivate me to train harder and lift a better result," Yuan said.

Lu and Yuan were tied in the snatch at 172.5kg. In the clean and jerk, Lu challenged the defending champion in his second lift by attempting to hoist 210kg and 212.5kg, but failed on two attempts due to lack of experience.

"I am quite upset about the result. It makes no difference whether I won the silver or the eighth place," Lu said.
