World champion Huang Shanshan somersaulted to the gold medal in the women's
trampoline individual competition, while Lu Chunlong from host Jiangsu claimed
the men's title Thursday at the 10th National Games.
The acrobatic display by the 19-year-old Huang, the Athens Olympics bronze
medallist who was also in the gold winning Chinese squad at the Eindhoven world
trampoline championships, earned her 39.50 points and allowed her to bury the
demons four years ago when she lost her chance for a medal at the last National
Games.
Luo Dan, from Hunan, won the silver with 39.10 points while Guangdong's Zhong
Xingping took bronze with 38.60 points. Both Luo and Zhong were in the gold
winning Chinese squad in Eindhoven. Defending champion Zheng Xiaojun finished
fifth.
But Huang's male counterparts had a sad show in the men's final, as leading
figures Ye Shuai and Liu Qipeng, both team gold medallists in Eindhoven,
collapsed under heavy pressure as the last two players in the fields.
After the failed show of Ye, who lost control in air and hit the side pads,
Liu Qipeng suffered the same fate and fell on the pads. Liu scored 10.60 and Ye
6.00, ranked ninth and tenth out often finalists.
Lu Chunlong, in cheers of home fans, scored 41.00 with a difficulty of 15.4.
His team mate Feng Qiangqaing snatched a silver with 40.70 points. The bronze
went to Mu Yongfeng, of Shanxi, at 40.20.
"I am so happy with a gold medal, " said Lu Chunlong, who showed up at the
National Games for the first time. He added that he really did not expect a gold
medal at this games.
Trampoline made its debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In the 2004 Athens
Olympics, Huang Shanshan claimed a bronze, the first trampoline medal for China
in international events. In Eindhoven, the Chinese squad swept four
golds.
