Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday met in Berlin with Norbert Lammert,
president of Germany's Bundestag (parliament). Hu said that exchanges between
German and Chinese legislatures are an important part of the bilateral
relations, and China's National People's Congress and the German parliament have
maintained good cooperation with more exchanges and closer contacts. Lammert,
who was newly elected in October, expressed admiration of China's rapid
development, saying the enormous changes in China are eye-catching to people
from all walks of life in Germany. The new session of the German parliament
is willing to increase contacts and exchange views with the Chinese legislature
regularly, aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and pushing forward the
German-Chinese relations, he added. Earlier Friday, Hu met Berlin Mayor Klaus
Wowereit. Hu expressed his hope that Berlin, a sister city of Beijing, along
with the Chinese capital, will play a bigger role in the development of
Sino-German relations. Wowereit said that cooperation between Berlin and
Beijing has been going smoothly. The mayor noted he is pleased to see Chinese
language courses being set up in more and more schools in Berlin, saying that he
believed such development will bring about positive effects on bilateral
relations between the two countries. Hu arrived here Thursday after a state
visit to Britain. Germany is the second leg of his four-nation European-Asian
tour, which will also take him to Spain and South Korea. He is also scheduled to
attend the 13th APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Busan, South Korea on Nov.
18-19.
