A gas blast killed five coal
miners and trapped 20 others in Hancheng, northwestern Shaanxi Province, on
Thursday while police in the northeast arrested 10 mine officials for a flood
that has left 25 missing. An explosion rocked the Hancheng coal mine at
9:15pm on Thursday, trapping 32 miners, the provincial government said
yesterday. About 20 minutes later, three of them escaped from the
mine. Rescuers yesterday saved four miners and recovered the bodies of five
others. Two of the saved workers suffered minor injuries. The private
Shangyukou Coal Mine in Xihan Village, which started operation in 1992, produces
60,000 tons of coal annually. It has about 60 employees. In jiaohe City,
northeastern Jilin Province, police on Thursday detained five officials of the
Tengda coal mine that was flooded on April 24 and five others at the Ji'an
colliery where the flooding reportedly originated. Sixty-nine workers were
trapped in the mishap, of whom 39 were rescued. On Wednesday, five workers were
found dead in the Tengda mine. The chances of survival for the rest 25 are very
slim, according to sources. Rescue work was being hampered because of
increasing toxic and inflammable gases in the shaft. In addition, long-time
soaking has put the shaft in danger of caving in, officials said. In another
mishap, five workers were rescued on Thursday, 60 hours after they were trapped
in a coal mine flooding in Xinshao County, Hunan Province. Sixteen miners
were working in the Tangbian colliery when the accident occurred on Tuesday
morning. Eleven of them fled.
