One man was killed and nearly 30 others were trapped underground following two separate coal mine accidents in the country's northeast and southwest over the past two days.
In the latest mishap in China's northeastern province of Heilongjiang, a fire at a coal mine in Shuangyashan City killed one miner and trapped 14 others yesterday.
The province's coal mine safety watchdog said 31 workers were underground about 10am yesterday when the mishap occurred.
By 5pm, rescuers saved 16 and retrieved the body of a killed worker from the Jinyuan Coal Mine in the city's Baoshan District, according to the Heilongjiang Coal Mine Safety Administration.
Authorities said an initial investigation showed a power cable caught fire, leading to the accident.
In southwestern China's Guizhou Province, rescuers were trying to reach 13 workers who went missing when a small colliery was flooded on Saturday.
When the mishap hit the Dahao Coal Mine in the province's Tianzhu County about 1:40pm, 39 men were underground, and 26 escaped.
