Rescuers are pumping water out of the flooded colliery in this capital of
northeast China's Jilin Province on Friday morning, but the whereabouts of the
six miners trapped Thursday in the pit remained unknown, local rescue source
said.
After 24 hours of continuing rescue work, the power supply and drainage
systems in the pit were restored by 6:00 a.m. Friday, said Li Lianqing, director
of the workplace safety bureau in Shuangyang district of the city.
About 60
cubic meters of flood water is being pumped out of the mine every hour, he said,
adding that a second pump will be in place by midday to speed up the drainage
process.
Li said toxic gas density in the pit has lowered to normal level and
two rescue teams are working round-the-clock to monitor the gas density.
The
flooding occurred at about 3:10 a.m. Thursday at Changling coalmine in
Changchun, trapping seven miners, with only one of them having been saved by
now, the local source said.
