The Chinese branch of the
United Nations Children's Fund is raising money to help AIDS-affected kids in
the country by sending donation request letters to people who have donated money
to various organizations in the past. Some people who have received the
letters, however, are not pleased to be on the mailing list. Dong Zongcai, a
74-year-old local retiree, received a letter on Thursday asking her to send
money for needy young AIDS sufferers in the country's Henan, Shanxi and Jilin
provinces. The letter, which claims to come from UNICEF, was sent directly to
Dong. But none of her neighbors or relatives have received a similar
request. "I've never had any contact with the organization. How can they know
my name and address so clearly?" Dong asked, adding that she wonders if the
letter is legitimate. An official with UNICEF's China branch, confirmed that
the organization initiated the donation drive.
