The city is taking action to arouse awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS
as World AIDS Day was marked yesterday.
The Shanghai Center of Disease
Prevention and Control and US-based firm 3M organized a gathering at Nanjing
Road Pedestrian Mall. Government officials, medical staff and the public
expressed best wishes for people infected with HIV or AIDS. People wrote down
their thoughts on an 18-meter billboard.
"I wrote 'let's work hand in hand to
beat AIDS,"' said Yang Lin, a Shanghai woman. "People with HIV and AIDS are the
same as others. We should create a more friendly environment for them."
One
hundred university students cycled around downtown distributing AIDS education
pamphlets yesterday.
"Our school gives every freshman a book on reproduction
and AIDS at the beginning of the semester. And peer education about AIDS between
students is also popular," said Lu Jun, a senior student from Shanghai Normal
University. She participated in the pamphlet distribution.
The Shanghai
Center of Disease Prevention and Control and UK-based Standard Chartered's local
branch announced yesterday it would build special communication rooms for people
infected with HIV or AIDS.
Such rooms will provide a cozy and private
environment for carriers and patients to receive consultation from doctors and
share experiences.
"The campaign against AIDS requires the involvement and
devotion of the government, medical institutions, businesses and individuals,"
said Yang Xiaodu, vice mayor of Shanghai.
