NPC deputies glean public opinions
3/3/2005 11:54

The third session of the Tenth National People's Congress, China's top legislature, will open on Saturday. This year's NPC session will last no more than 10 days. Deputies have prepared for the event by soliciting public feedback on the issues that matter most to the people.

The problems faced by the country's farmers have been a long-time focus of NPC deputy Wang Shouchen. Through his website "The Farmer's Mailbox," he established direct dialogue with the farmers and found out the problems that are taxing them most.

NPC Deputy Wang Shouchen said, "I think it is important to legalize the government's favorable agricultural policies to ensure the polices' consistency and their smooth implementation. Farmers lack such assurances, and this is my point."

For many deputies, field trips and family visits have proved an effective method to hear what the people are saying.

During her many visits to households around the country, Deputy Liu Sanqiu received more than 2,000 letters from interviewees on their biggest problems in life and their suggestions for improvement.

After spending a whole year researching healthcare conditions in more than a hundred local communities in northeast China's Liaoning Province, Deputy Zhao Peng came up with a series of proposals on beefing up the medical system in urban communities.
