"Every hour 300 deaths occur in China due to cardiovascular diseases."
- Wu Yiling, President of the Medical Research Institute at Hebei Medical University. He called for more resources to preventing the fatal diseases. China sees an annual loss of more than 200 billion yuan (US$24.1 billion) in medical and labor costs due to cardiovascular disease, which is mainly caused by an unhealthy life style.


"During the night mice squeaked and scurried  above my head."
- Fan Jinshi, 67, President of the Dunhuang Research Academy, has spent 41 years studying and advocating the preservation of the ancient Mogao Grottoes (also known as the Thousand-Buddha Caves) in northwest Gansu Province. She has endured living with only basic necessities, including having only a roof made of paper.

"I feel dizzy whenever I talk about real estate prices."
- Yu Guosheng, an NPC Deputy, referred to houses priced at 10,000 (US$1,200), 30,000 or even 50,000 yuan per square meter in some cities. He observed that a whole year's income for most people can only buy one square meter.

"The annual expenditure of one college student equals the yearly income of nine peasants."
- Cheng Su, an NPC Deputy, indicated that college students spend too much and that the country's income gap is wide.
