Thousands rally against Japanese

Shanghai Daily news

Some 20,000 Shanghai students and older citizens took part in anti-Japanese demonstrations across the city on Saturday.
"Dissatisfied with Japan's wrong attitudes and actions on a series of issues such as its history of aggression, the students and citizens spontaneously took to the streets to demonstrate and protest, expressing their discontent with the right-wing forces in Japan," Shanghai government spokeswoman Jiao Yang said on Saturday night.
Jiao said she hopes the Japanese will "seriously consider the Chinese people's concerns and properly handle the history of Japanese aggression against China" and other sensitive issues.
Shanghai police and other municipal departments have made great efforts to ensure the safety of Japanese organizations and citizens based in the city, Jiao said.
She said timely measures were taken to alleviate the security situation on Saturday and the social order was largely maintained.
Jiao reminded citizens that anyone who wants to organize assemblies, processions or demonstrations must apply to and gain approval from public security authorities.
She repeated a government call for people to "remain calm and rational.''
Wenhui Daily reported yesterday that a few people who threw stones and broke glass during the protest march were detained by the city's public security bureau for threatening public order and will face punishment.
