The Shanghai Public Security
Bureau yesterday denied rumors it has approved an application for anti-Japanese
demonstrations over the Labor Day holiday. The bureau has received no such
application, a spokesperson said at a press conference in response to a
reporter's question about rumors circulating on the Internet and by cell phone
short messages that it had approved street protests scheduled for May 1 and May
4. To ensure social stability, police will not approve any rally,
demonstration or protest in the near future, the bureau said.
