South Korean television shows are enjoying broad popularity, we decided to
find out what is it about these programs that resonates with Chinese audiences.
Why are shows like ˇ®Autumn Fairy Tale' and ˇ®Winter Sonata,' such hits in
mainland China. Our reporter Xiaoyu finds out, is it the good looking actors, or
the punchy plots that is attracting audiences.
South Korean television dramas did not previously travel beyond Korea's
borders, but during the past several years, they began to acquire a strong
following throughout Asia and around the world. China is in the first batch of
countries exposed to these Korean dramas, and they are gaining feverish
popularity.
Last year more than 13 Korean TV series were introduced in China. Turn on the
TV, and Korean beauties are appearing during peak viewing times. Some of the
dramas are being repeated, but audiences continue to tune in. Why are the South
Korean TV series loved by so many? Cheng Yi-Ting, a student from East China
Normal University, gives us her reasons.
Miss Cheng's idea is shared by many. The good looking actors with fashionable
clothes and the picturesque landscape shot in the dramas are all the selling
points for South Korean TV dramas. But what touched the young audiences most is
the pure and touching emotions the actors express.
And it seems that South Korean TV series has also won the hearts of people
from older generations, who are touched by the morals in the shows. These
include the importance of respecting elders and social order. The Korean dramas
series really manifest love and emotion in lives and express emotions we can all
relate to. Though some are complaining that the South Korean TV series are slow
paced, there is no denying that most of the Chinese audiences like them. Maybe
we are really tired of the clich¨¦d love stories shown in Western TV series.
Compared with that, South Korean TV dramas are like a breeze that gently sways
our soul.
