Sharon Likely in "Vegetative State"
Ariel Sharon, 77, Israel's oldest serving prime minister, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on January 4 and underwent surgery. Powers were transferred to his deputy, Vice Premier Ehud Oimert. The massive stroke made it unlikely that he would return to power, and plunged the region into uncertainty.

Acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sits next to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's empty chair during an emergency cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on January 5. Olmert, deputy prime minister and finance minister, was made acting premier after Sharon has been in the hospital to undergo surgery from which medical experts have warned he may not recover.
