Chirac urges Iran to renew nuclear dialogue
5/3/2006 9:59
French President Jacques Chirac called Saturday on the Iranian leaders to
resume dialogue with European countries on the nuclear issue. "I regret that
no agreement could be reached on the basis of what the Europeans were
proposing," Chirac said in an interview with the Saudi newspaper Al Hayat during
his official visit to the Saudi Arabia. "I call on the Iranian leaders to
renew the spirit of dialogue and to understand the wishes of the entire
international community," he said. Chirac reaffirmed that "the door remains
open for a resumption of discussions, as soon as Iran conforms with the requests
of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)". Talks between the European
and Iran on the Iranian nuclear program ended Friday without any agreement to
halt Iran's activities on uranium enrichment, a process that can produce
material for civilian nuclear reactor or for atomic bomb. Iran restarted
enrichment activities last month, two years after voluntarily freezing the
program during talks with the Europeans. Tehran is insisting however on
retaining a small research capacity in its enrichment plant, but many in the
West fear that Iran will develop atomic weapons. Iran insists that it has
rights to develope nuclear energy. The UN Security Council is waiting
until the end of next week's board meeting to decide on further action.
