The United States appealed to the UN Security Council yesterday to take
measures against Iran which announced early this week to have produced enriched
uranium.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice "talked about how
it's time for the Security Council to take additional steps on the diplomatic
front if Iran continues down the current path that they are on," White House
spokesman Scott McClellan told a news briefing.
McClellan said Iran's announcement that it has successfully enriched uranium
"only further isolates the regime, and we are consulting with the Security
Council, we are consulting with our friends and allies, who are also concerned
about this issue."
"I think the international community is united in our concern and
determination to prevent the regime from developing a nuclear weapons capability
or nuclear weapons, and we'll continue those consultations about what the next
steps would be," he said.
The United States has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under
the cover of civilian nuclear programs. However, Iran has said its nuclear
programs are for civil purposes only.
