Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday had a telephone discussion
with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the coming meeting of
diplomatic quartet and the Iranian nuclear issue.
The conversation "focused on the search for a diplomatic solution to the
Iranian nuclear problem," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement
In Washington, a spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department confirmed that
Rice and Lavrov talked about "a number of issues regarding the quartet" and the
Monday meeting of five permanent members of the UN Security Council on Iran.
The quartet, consisting of the United Nations, the United States, the
European Union and Russia, is seeking to bring a solution to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They are due to meet in New York on Tuesday.
Before the telephone conversation, Russia stuck to its demand on Saturday
that the draft resolution on Iran submitted by European countries to the UN
Security Council "needs adjustment."
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak was quoted by Interfax new
agency as saying "It is too early to say which changes should be made to the
draft resolution to satisfy Russia."
France and Britain, backed by the United States, introduced on Wednesday the
draft resolution to the UN Security Council, demanding Iran suspend all
enrichment activities immediately or face possible sanctions.
