Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh
Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah said Tuesday the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
attaches importance to peaceful and political options on resolving Iran's
nuclear issue.
Speaking to reporters before the fifth ministerial meeting of the Asia
Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) which opened in Qatar, Sheikh Mohammad said the GCC
attaches great importance to the stabilization of the Middle East region, makes
great efforts to ease tensions and calls on Iran to fully cooperate with the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the international community.
The minister said the GCC leaders had appealed for direct contact between the
GCC and Iran to emphasize the importance for all countries in the region to
maintain security and stabilization together.
He also stressed the need for the GCC to "cordially talk to Iran," adding a
multilateral delegation formed by the gulf countries would go to Iran soon, but
the level of the delegation and its departure date were still uncertain.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammad said Iran is a member of the IAEA and the country
must comply to the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), adding the GCC has the same
position with the IAEA.
When referring to Iran's ongoing nuclear reactor construction, Sheikh
Mohammad stressed Iran must take all measures to avoid accidents and the GCC's
concern about the regional nuclear security is "reasonable."
The GCC, established in May 1981, groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi
Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
