US urges Iran to respond positively to incentive offer
14/6/2006 15:39

The United States said yesterday that it hopes Iran could respond positively to a proposal put forward by the five permanent members of the United Nations plus Germany over how to resolve Iran's nuclear issue.
"We would hope that Iran responds positively to the offer that has been presented to them ... They have a decision to make, and we will see what that decision is," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at a briefing.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has had a few conversations with some foreign ministers of the offering countries over the issue, McCormack said.
The spokesman insisted that Iran should respond to the offer in weeks rather than months.
Last month, the six major powers - the United States, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany - put forward a proposal that included both incentives for Iran to cooperate and disincentives if Iran refuses.
The United States has urged Iran to respond to the offer in "a matter of weeks," or face action by the United Nations Security Council.
