Tehran is expected to respond to the proposal of the six major powers
aimed at resolving the Iranian nuclear standoff soon, Russian Foreign Minister
Sergei Lavrov said yesterday. "There is no reply yet, but we hope to receive
one within several weeks," Lavrov was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as
saying in St. Petersburg. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said
earlier in the day that Russia expected Iran to give a "close and balanced"
study of the proposal. European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana
presented Iran with the new package of incentives, agreed by the five permanent
members of the UN Security Council and Germany to get it to halt nuclear
enrichment, during his visit to Tehran last week. The new package contains
economic and political incentives, including talks with the United States,
Western help to build nuclear reactors for Iran, a guaranteed supply of nuclear
fuel and permission for Iran to buy aircraft and spare parts if Tehran suspends
uranium enrichment. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Saturday
Iran might make its own proposals, either in the form of amendments to the
six-nation offer or a counter-package.
