Most Americans do not see Iran as imminent threat: poll
16/6/2006 11:14

Most Americans think that Iran does not pose an imminent threat to the United States, according to a recent poll by CBS News.

The television network said Thursday that 55 percent of the respondents regard Iran as a threat that can be contained with diplomacy now, while 19 percent believe that Iran is not a threat at this time.

Only 21 percent believe Iran is a threat to the United States that requires immediate military action.

The survey was conducted among 659 American adults on June 10-11.

Earlier Thursday, the United States and some European countries urged Iran to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding its nuclear activities and suspend uranium enrichment. Washington warned that continued defiance could "result in tough measures by the UN Security Council."
