Former UN official urges Iran to end uranium enrichment

Former chief of the United Nations arms inspector Hans Blix here Tuesday urged Iran to end its controversial uranium enrichment program, which can raise tension in the region.

Talking to reporters after meeting with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Blix said that the Iranian nuclear program was not unstoppable as the decision was on the hand of the country's government.

"...so if they (Iranian authorities) can get some advantage from staying away from this (the enrichment), which would increase the tension very much in the Middle East. I think it would be wise for doing so," he said.

Western countries said Iran could continue its nuclear program only under the condition of strong surveillance to ensure that the country does not use the program for the nuclear enrichment.

Meanwhile, Iran has rejected the Russia's offer to enrich the uranium in Russia to avoid the suspicion from the West that the country enrich uranium.

Iran said that the country needs the application of the nuclear technology for scientific purpose.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the United Stated of having double standard on the issue, accusing the country producing huge number of nuclear weapons with various type.
