German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will meet his Iranian
counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki on Saturday to discuss Iran's nuclear issue, a
Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.
The talks will focus on "the questions of mutual and international
interests," which are highlighted by the nuclear issue, said spokesman Martin
Jaeger.
Iran has so far failed to give an official answer to the latest package of
incentives in exchange for the suspension of its uranium enrichment. The
proposals were presented by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana on June 6, and
international pressure is building up on the Central Asian state to respond
positively.
Iranian leaders have given mixed reactions toward the six-nation initiative
hammered out by five UN Security Council permanent members -- Britain, China,
France, Russia and the United States -- and Germany.
Mottaki said last week that Iran was optimistic about the proposal, while the
country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed that his nation would not
bow to western pressure.
Iran's nuclear crisis also tops the agenda of the EU-US summit taking place
in Vienna on Wednesday.
