Russia criticized the United States on Friday for slapping sanctions on
its state arms exporter and an arms manufacturer over alleged dealings with
Iran.
The US State Department earlier in the day announced the sanction against
Russian state arms exporter Rosoboron export and aircraft
maker Sukhoi, along with five other companies from India, Cuba and the
Democratic People's Republic of Korea, for their alleged arms deals with Iran.
"We consider this move by the U.S. State Department unacceptable. In effect,
it amounts to one more unjustifiable attempt to force foreign companies to
operate by U.S. domestic rules," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"Our companies involved in military technological cooperation with foreign
countries act in strict conformity with international law and Russian
legislation, including commitments to nonproliferation and export control," the
commentary said.
Russia "confines itself to exporting to Iran purely defensive armaments,
which would not destabilize the situation in the region," it said.
Sukhoi denied the U.S. accusation.
"We are studying local laws very closely and never breached any rules,"
Sukhoi Deputy General Director Alexander Klementyev said on the Ekho Moskvy
radio. "Sukhoi has not delivered anything to Iran for the past six or seven
years," he said.
