Iran: nuclear program is peaceful
20/9/2006 17:26

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in his address to the UN General Assembly yesterday evening, said his country's activities were "transparent, peaceful and under the watchful eyes of IAEA inspectors."

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is a member of the IAEA and is committed to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty). All our nuclear activities are transparent, peaceful and under the watchful eyes of IAEA inspectors," he said.

To develop a peaceful nuclear program was Iran's "legally recognized right," Ahmadinejad said.

Contrary to Iran's claims, the United States has accused Tehran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution in July, asking Iran to suspend the uranium enrichment activities by the end of August. However, Iran has refused to abide by the resolution and the United States has since tried to seek UN Security Council sanctions against the Islamic country.
