Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini yesterday
demanded Russia to use diplomacy to bring the Iranian nuclear case back to the
framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
"This is our expectation from the Russians to take advantage of their
diplomatic capacities in this regard," Hosseini told a press conference.
Iran will keep its collaboration with the IAEA since it owns the best
authority to consider the issue, Hosseini asserted.
He said that if Iran's nuclear issue returned to the IAEA, the ambiguities
being posed would be studied better than the past, but he failed to elaborate
what kind of ambiguities he referred to.
The spokesman also referred to Iran's latest agreement with the IAEA, which
demanded access to materials related to the country's uranium enrichment
activities, saying this should be interpreted as the continuation of Iran's
cooperation with the IAEA.
IAEA board of governors on Feb. 4 adopted at an emergency meeting a
resolution by 27 against three with five abstentions to report Iran's nuclear
issue to the UN Security Council.
The resolution touched off prompt hails of the United States, the European
Union (EU) and even Russia, a longtime supporter of Tehran over its nuclear
dispute.
Tehran has slashed at such decision for a long time since Iran's leaders
rejected all the UN requests or resolutions concerning suspension of uranium
enrichment in the past nine months.
Iran's parliament had warned earlier this month that it would ban the entry
of IAEA inspectors into Iran in case the UN Security Council issues any sanction
resolution against the country.
However, Iran still agreed to an IAEA request to take further environmental
samples from the equipment already sampled at a technical university, confirmed
IAEA chief Mohammad ElBaradei on Saturday.
