Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat revealed on Saturday that
international observers to monitor the coming Palestinian legislative election
would be present in East Jerusalem.
Erekat told the Voice of Palestine radio that the mission of the
international observers would be monitoring the election due on Jan. 25 in East
Jerusalem as well as the entire Palestinian territories.
Israel hasn't yet officially accepted the participation of East Jerusalemites
in the Palestinian election. The Israeli cabinet would convene on Sunday to make
its final decision concerning the issue.
Israeli media reports have said that Israel would accept East Jerusalemites
participation in the legislative election with a condition that the Islamic
Resistance Movement (Hamas) shouldn't participate.
Hamas leaders refused the Israeli condition and insisted that they have their
own methods and ways to campaign and vote in the election.
Erekat pointed out that President Mahmoud Abbas emphasized, during his meeting
with U.S. envoy to the Middle East David Welchin Ramallah Friday, on the
importance of the Palestinian vote mainly in East Jerusalem.
Abbas demanded to conduct the legislative elections on Jan. 25 and to have
free elections according to the arrangements of the first ever elections held in
1996, said Erekat.
The U.S. envoy "told us they will exert every possible effort to have free
elections according to the 1996 arrangements", he added.
