Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Wednesday night that the Palestinian people are heading towards a new era with the first successful parliamentary elections in ten years.

"We need world help to get back to the negotiating table with Israel in order to renew the peace process," Abbas told a news conference at his Ramallah headquarters after the elections closed.

"We want Sharm el-Sheikh understanding to be implemented and we want to start the talks on the final status," he added.Abbas expected the final election results to come out either tonight or Thursday morning, adding the ballots will decide who is the winner.

"We are more interested in the official results announced by the Palestinian Central Election Commission," said Abbas.
