Hamas leader says resistance against Israel not final goal

Visiting Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Mashaal said yesterday that
armed resistance against Israel is Hamas's chosen strategy, not its final
goal. Mashaal, who heads a Hamas delegation, arrived in Sanaa on Sunday in an
attempt to drum up political and financial support. He told a news conference
that it was not easy for Hamas to coordinate relations between its
administration and the resistance against Israel, because the Palestinians had
no choice but resistance in their bid to end Israeli occupation. Asked about
the new Palestinian government, Mashaal said Hamas had been trying to cooperate
with other political parties to form a united government. Hamas had found
common ground with different Palestinian factions, but they had the right to
make their own decisions, including the right not to join a Hamas-led
government, he added. Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, after a meeting
with Mashaal, reaffirmed his country's support to the Palestinians' "struggle
for regaining their legitimate rights and establishing an independent state with
Jerusalem as capital."
