Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri defended on Saturday politburo chief Khaled
Mashaal's controversial speech slamming Fatah movement and Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas.
"We, the Hamas movement, stress on the importance of Mashaal's remarks which
came to make clear what challenges and obstacles the Palestinian government
faces," Abu Zuhri said in a press release.
Abu Zuhri said that Mashaal wanted to say the truth "before our people and
nation."
The Hamas spokesman made the remarks shortly after Fatah denounced on
Saturday the speech made by Mashaal on Friday in Damascus.
Addressing a gathering marking the anniversary of the death of Hamas
spiritual leader Ahmed Yassin held in Syrian capital of Damascus on Friday,
Mashaal accused Abbas and his Fatah movement of corruption and plotting against
Hamas.
The controversial speech joined another dispute between the Hamas-led
government and Abbas as a decision to form a new security force was vetoed by
Abbas, who termed it as illegal and against constitutional rules.
In an earlier statement, Abu Zuhri accused some "internal elements" of
joining a conspiracy of trying to topple the Hamas-led cabinet.
Hamas came to power in late March, but has since been facing internal and
external pressure, which pushes the newly-installed cabinet on the brink of
bankruptcy.
