The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) denied reports on Sunday that
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas will meet Hamas Politburo chief Khaled Meshaal
in Turkey. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told reporters in Gaza City that he
did not get any information over a scheduled meeting between Meshaal and Abbas,
who is now in Jordan as part of a five-nationtour.
Meshaal's controversial speech on Friday, which accused Abbas and his Fatah
movement of corruption and plotting to topple the Hamas-led cabinet, has
triggered clashes between supporters of Hamas and Fatah, leaving 20 university
students injured. Abu Zuhri said the clashes were "unjustifiable," adding that
the two parties agreed to end the crisis after a midnight meeting on Saturday.
Abu Zuhri went on to say that Hamas was interested in keeping coordination
between the two parties and relations between Hamas and Abbas "were based on
mutual respect."
However, Abu Zuhri criticized Abbas for accepting Jordan's claim that Hamas
attempted to smuggle weapons into Amman. Abbas said earlier that such attempts
were "dangerous and astonishing."
Abu Zuhri said that Hamas "was shocked by Abbas' statements."
