Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneya on Wednesday called on Arabs and
Muslims to wage mass demonstrations on Friday in support of the Hamas-led
government and against the American policy of siege.
"The Palestinian government urges Arab and Islamic nations, and all honest
people to express solidarity with our people by voicing their refusal of the
American policy of starving and blockade against the Palestinian people," said
Haneya, who is also a senior Hamas leader.
"Supporting Palestinians could be achieved by organizing mass protests and
rallies in the occupied Palestine or outside it next Friday," he added.
The new Hamas-led Palestinian government now relies basically on Arab and
Islamic support in order to offset the halt of the western aids, mainly from the
United States and the European Union (EU), due to Hamas' refusal to renounce
violence and recognize Israel.
The U.S. and EU along with Israel also decided to isolate the Hamas
government by cutting all contacts with it. As an Islamic leader, Haneya used to
deliver sermons at Friday prayers, during one of which after his party took
power he called on the Palestinians to be ready to live on "olives and thymes"
to defy the siege.
