Palestinian lawmaker Mustafa al-Barghouti on Saturday called upon all
Palestinian factions to participate in a national dialogue expected to be held
later this month.
Al-Barghouti, head of the National Initiative party in the parliament, told
local radio "Voice of Palestine" that all factions should participate in the
dialogue in a bid to better deal with internal and external pressures the
Palestinians are facing.
The coming talks will also help form a united Palestinian front to break up
any unilateral step by Israel, he added. In addition, al-Barghouti said that
Palestinian civil and private organizations should also be allowed to take part
in the talks in order to make the conference "represent all circles of the
society."
"I hope the conference can help rally international support to the
Palestinians to counter the Israeli plan of unilateral withdrawals from the West
Bank," he added.
The lawmaker said that an ad hoc committee in charge of preparations for the
national dialogue would hold its first meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah
later on Saturday. The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), bent on Israel¡¯s
destruction, took the reins of the Palestinian government in late March after
winning the January legislative elections. But the new government has been
confronted with a severe financial crisis due to the West's cut of crucial aid
and political isolation.
Meanwhile, newly sworn-in Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has announced
that he intends to draw the borders with the Palestinians within four years by
quitting isolated settlements in the West Bank but enlarging bigger ones in the
absence of peace talks with the Palestinian side.
