A senior official in the Hamas-led government said yesterday that a
harmony has been reached among Hamas leaders on a prisoners' document.
Finance Minister Omar Abdel Razeq told reporters in Ramallah that there is
satisfaction among Hamas leaders on the document "that would gain consensus of
all factions and powers." The document, also known as the Document of National
Accordance, calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on
the 1967 borders.
The document, drafted by Palestinian leaders jailed in Israeli prison, was
widely considered as an implicit recognition of Israel, which contradicts Hamas'
charters that call for the destruction of Israel.
"We do agree on most of the document, but there are some points that need to
be amended. If the points are amended, all the parties will be satisfied," said
Abdel Razeq.
On May 25, President Mahmoud Abbas opened a national dialogue by asking
Palestinian factions to accept within 10 days the document, or he would put the
proposal to a referendum within 40 days.
Abbas and the Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee decided
Tuesday to extend the deadline till Friday.
