Over one third of the Dutch population watched the national side win 1-0
against Serbia and Montenegro in the FIFA World Cup game on Sunday, Dutch news
agency, ANP quoted a survey on Monday. Around 5.4 million people tuned into
the game on television in their sitting rooms, ratings watchdog Stichting
KijkOnderzoek (Viewer Ratings Foundation) was quoted as saying. The number of
people who watched the game in pubs and stadiums is not yet known. By
comparison, only 300,000 people watched the final match of the prestigious
French Open tennis tournament in Paris, which began at the same time as the
World Cup match involving the Dutch team. The Angola-Portugal and Mexico-Iran
games on Sunday also drew large numbers of viewers in the Netherlands (2.6
million and 2.2 million respectively), according to the survey. The Dutch
press, which is normally curmudgeonly in its evaluation of the national side,
praised the performance of the Orange team on Monday in extravagant
terms. "Class!" was the Algemeen Dagblad's headline, while De Telegraaf
described the game as a "great start" and a "promising overture." De Volkskrant
complimented coach Marco van Basten for his team selection.
