Striker Carlos Tenorio is doubtful for Ecuador's final Group A match
against host Germany on Tuesday, team officials said on Saturday. Tenorio,
who scored in each of Ecuador's victories over Poland and Costa Rica, has a
painful ankle after the latter match and will probably be rested until the
knockout phase, for which Ecuador have already qualified with two straight
wins. Coach Luis Fernando Suarez expressed optimism that all 23 members of
his squad would be fit to play Tuesday's game, but acknowledged he was likely to
rest a few players. "We won't change much. Some with yellow cards may not
play, but a few with yellows will," Suarez said. Captain Ivan Hurtado, fellow
defender Ulises de la Cruz, keeper Cristian Mora and midfielders Edison Mendez
and Castillo Segundo have each picked up one yellow card in Ecuador's first two
matches and would miss the first knockout match if they were cautioned
again. However, players with just one yellow after the group phase will have
their records cleared for the next round.
