Costa Rica soccer federation confirms Guimaraes as manager

Jose Joaquin Aguilar, President of Costa Rica's Football Federation, told
Monday's La Nacion newspaper that Alexandre Guiamaraes, the national team's
manager, will keep his job, even though the team was kicked out of soccer's
World Cup. It makes no sense to change the five-week-old decision to renew
Guiamaraes contract, Aguilar said: "if that were the case, we would have to
change manager every time we had a bad result. That makes no sense." "I have
nothing more to say on this topic. I want Guima to continue," he added. Pablo
Lopez, a member of the Federation's executive committee, said that although fans
were not happy with the current results, the committee is trying to think of the
long term. "We are betting on continuity, not on improvisation. Now we have
to think of our next major goal: reaching the next World Cup in South Africa in
2010," he said. Costa Rica fell two games: a 2-4 defeat to Germany and a 0-3
defeat to Ecuador at the ongoing 2006 World Cup. Aguilar said he would not
predict Tuesday's match between Poland and Costa Rica, but added that come what
may, Guiamaraes would remain in charge. "One cannot clean today's clothes
using tomorrow's sunny day, but in soccer there is always pressure and one has
to stand firm and do the right thing," Aguilar said.
