Today comes the Moment of Truth for France who must beat Togo by two goals
to secure a place for the second round at the World Cup.
Due to their two draws with Switzerland (0-0) and South Korea (1-1), France
need to win by at least two clear goals to be certain of reaching the next
round. A victory with a margin of one goal may not be enough, if South Korea
draw with Switzerland. If the tiebreakers 'goal difference' or 'goals scored'
are not decisive, the drawing of lots by the Organizing Committee for the World
Cup will decide who reaches the last 16.
"We need to score two more goals than our opponents and our strikers know
what is expected from them," coach Raymond Domenech told a news conference.
The captain of Les Bleus, Zinadine Zidane will miss the Togo game after
collecting his second yellow card of the round, so as defender Eric Abidal.
Franck Ribery is set to substitute for Zidane, with Mikael Silvestre slotting in
for Abidal. Midfielder Patrick Vieira will take the captain's armband in
Zidane's absence.
Besides, coach Raymond Domenech is expected to make some changes in his
attacking system. David Trezeguet will join Thierry Henry in attack. Henry 's
goal in the second group match against South Korea was the first World Cup goal
for France since they beat Brazil (3-0) in the final eight years ago. The rest
of the team composition looks certain to remain unchanged.
One of the six debutant teams of the Germany World Cup, Togo possess a pair
of strikers capable of giving the strongest defence problems. Emmanuel Adebayor,
tall and strong, was dominant in the air and never stopped working and probing
for a goal. Alongside him Mohamed Kader, small and pacy, showed a different form
of attacking menace.
Though they were already eliminated from the World Cup games, the "Sparrow
Hawks" won't give up easily against France. "We will try to save the honor of
our country by winning one if not three points," said Adebayor, who is teammate
with Henry at Arsenal. "We want to do it for ourselves, our families and for
Africa."
And for Les Bleus, it will be a huge deception if they couldn't reach their
aim. "It would be a huge, huge deception if we went out again," said Vieira
Wednesday. "Worse than in 2002. Because we are a stronger team now, stronger
physically and better prepared."
