Brazil's sporting press yesterday cheered Portugal's soccer team's victory
over Holland in the 2006 Germany World Cup, which takes the team through to the
quarter-final of the competition; their praise focused, Felipe Scolari, the
team's Brazilian-born manager.
"Felipe is the heart, the race, the tension and the victory," said the sports
section of national daily, O Globo. As well as achieving their goal of reaching
the quarter-finals the team can celebrate 31 victories in the last 47 games
played under Scolari, the paper said.
Estado do Sao Paulo said that the game was "Electrifying, nerve-wracking...
the best game of the Germany World Cup so far."
Meanwhile, the Folha de Sao Paulo said that the claws of the Scolari team
crushed a weak orange -- referring to the color of Holland's soccer kit.
"Frenzied, the Brazilian manager is vibrant to the end, yelling insults from
the edge of the pitch, from where his Dutch opposite number Van Bastan sees the
defeat with impassive features," the newspaper said.
As well as cheering on Scolari, winning his 11th consecutive victory with the
team, the Brazilian press cheered on the home team.
