Deco warns teammates over England
29/6/2006 10:27

Portugal player Deco has warned his team-mates on Wednesday that Sven-Goran Eriksson's players have yet to reveal the real England at the World Cup.

The Barcelona player said: "England are a very strong team but they have not been showing what they can do with the good players they have in the side."

Deco is suspended for Saturday's quarter-final clash in Gelsenkirchen, along with fellow midfielder Costinha, after being shown the red card in their stormy meeting with the Netherlands which also saw the Dutch down to nine men by the end.

Deco, however, insisted that Portugal can win without both himself and Costinha. He said: "The most important thing is that the national team can beat England. It doesn't matter who plays in my place, all that matters is that we win."

"We have a lot of wonderful players. The substitutes who come in are going to do the same job as we have done." the Barcelona player added.

When asked about the lack of style shown by England and whether he would pay to watch them if he was a fan, he replied: "I would pay to see England play, but I would prefer to pay to watch Portugal."

The match is a replay of the Euro 2004 quarter-final when England lost on penalties after Wayne Rooney had been taken off with a foot injury.

"The moment I left the field with the red card I did not think about England. It was that we had to play with nine players with a few minutes left to play." said Deco.
