Poland to repair ailing football
2/7/2006 10:29

Poland's ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) wants state support for mass sports and a debate on repairing Poland's ailing football, PiS parliamentary leader Przemyslaw Gosiewski told the media on Saturday.

Poland will not achieve success in professional sports without state funding for mass sports, Gosiewski said. He added that PiS was for developing a child and youth sports programme.

PiS executive official Michal Kaminski suggested a "round tabledebate" on Polish football in the wake of the Polish team's poor results in the World Cup opening round. Kaminski also pointed to "pathologies" in the Polish Football Association (PZPN).

The Warsaw city paper Metro said that Poland's football coach Pawel Janas will probably be replaced by Jan Urban, a former Polish soccer national currently in charge of a under-21 team in one of the Spain's clubs.
