Fuming Rooney tries to confront Ronaldo: report
4/7/2006 10:18

A furious Wayne Rooney attempted to barge into the Portugal dressing room to confront Cristiano Ronaldo after England's penalty shootout defeat to Portugal Sunday, reports said.

The Manchester United striker was incensed at the role of his club team-mate in his sending off and has reportedly vowed to "split him in two".

According to The Daily Mirror, a 'blazing mad' Rooney had to be restrained by his England team-mates before being bundled on to the team bus following the Three Lions' defeat on penalties.

But Rooney's fury was still threatening to explode the next morning. The Sun quotes an 'England insider' declaring: "At breakfast in the hotel this morning, Wayne said he would split him in two and smack him in the head."

Rooney was dismissed in the 62nd minute for stomping on Ricardo Carvalho. After the nearby referee blew his whistle, Ronaldo raced to speak to the official. When Rooney shoved Ronaldo away, the referee pulled out the red card.

Ronaldo, who also scored the winner in the penalty shoot-out, insisted he had nothing to apologise to team-mate Wayne Rooney about.

"People are saying the referee gave a red card because I spoke with him and asked him to show a red card - but that is not true," he said in the Daily Express.

"It was not my fault. I spoke with Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville and they did not have a problem with me.

"I did not get the chance to speak to Wayne, I will phone him. But why would I feel sorry for him? I don't feel sorry for Wayne.

"This is a time to congratulate Portugal and celebrate our victory. We will enjoy this party."

Ronaldo has already upset some during Portugal's run to the semi-finals by telling a Spanish newspaper he would like to join Real Madrid.

Over the weekend he confirmed he had held talks with one of Real Madrid's presidential candidates in Germany and he is keen on moving to the Spanish capital.

"Yes, they are true," he said when asked about the reports. "After the World Cup, I decide my life."
