Beckenbauer wants Klinsmann to stay

German soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer said in Dortmund yesterday that he
wants Juergen Klinsmann to carry on as coach despite a heart-breaking 2-0 defeat
to Italy in the World Cup semi-final. Beckenbauer is a legend because he won
the World Cup in 1974 on home soil as a player and in 1990 in Italy as a coach.
And Klinsmann was the prolific striker in the 1990 winning team. Beckenbauer,
the president of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, said: "I really hope Klinsmann
will continue. He left a big influence on this team, and the players trust
him." "You can't say that Italy were two goals better, but they were more
clever. The German team played well, but Italy deserved to be in the final."
Beckenbauer said. Klinsmann is under contract only until the end of the 2006
World Cup finals. After the defeat to Italy, Klinsmann said: "My own
situation is not the most important thing right now. I need some time to let all
of this sink in and some time to speak to my family." Klinsmann chose to
continue living in California until shortly before the World Cup and he has
resisted calls for him to re-settle in Germany.
