France coach Raymond Domenech said that he felt sad for the sending off of
captain Zinedine Zidane in yesterday's World Cup final. Zidane was shown the
red card in extra-time for head-butting defender Marco Materazzi in the World
Cup final which France lost to Italy 5-3 after penalty shootouts. "Materrazzi
is the man of the match, not Andrea Pirlo," said Domenech. Domenech said:
"It's a pity. We also feel sad. Zidane is a great player. He really played a
great show before being sent off. We regretted it and he also regretted
it." Zidane had opened the scoring for France early on from the spot before
Materazzi levelled for Italy. "To see him finish his career in this way is
sad," said Domenech."He has had a great career and a great World
Cup." Domenech said he was disappointed after the defeat. "They players had a
great game. We put the game under control but we didn't manage to score a second
goal despite some good chances. "You can't be happy for making the final. I
am disappointed. The only thing I feel now is huge disappointment. We deserved
the title based over the whole match. "Only victory is beautiful and we
missed out just by a little thing. We can say it wasn't too bad but it is the
Italians who are the world champions."
