German chancellor condemns Mumbai bombing
12/7/2006 11:52

German Chancellor Angela Merkel Tuesday condemned the attacks in India's Mumbai which killed at least 140 people and injured hundreds.

In a message to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Merkel extended her condolences to the victims of the attacks on Mumbai's rail network and their families.

"The appalling news of a series of attacks in your country with many dead and injured greatly affected me," said Merkel.

"The Federal Government of Germany emphatically condemns these terrorist acts," she added.

India and Germany vowed to foster stronger strategic relationship when Singh visited Germany earlier this year.

At least 140 people were killed and more than 300 others injured when seven powerful bombs ripped through crowded commuter trains in Mumbai Tuesday.

The blasts occurred at packed railway stations or on trains in the Matunga, Khar, Mahim, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Bhayendar localities in and around Mumbai and a seventh blast occurred at a subway near Khar.
