Israeli warplanes strike fuel tanks in Beirut airport
17/7/2006 11:08

Israeli warplanes fired more than 20 missiles at main fuel tanks in Beirut's international airport and a nearby tunnel on Sunday night.

At least one of the tanks was set on fire, according to local Future TV.

There was no immediate report of any casualties. The airport, Lebanon's only international airport, has come under repeated Israeli strikes since Israel launched a massive assault in Lebanon on Wednesday when the Lebanese Hizbollah militia kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and killed eight during cross-border clashes.

The airport has remained shut since Thursday when its runways were hit by Israeli missiles.

Meanwhile, the Israeli navy has blockaded Lebanon's sea ports and the main highway linking Beirut and Damascus was also badly damaged in Israeli air strikes.
