A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on the
international community on Wednesday "to meet their responsibilities" and stop
Israel's offensive into the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
Nabil Abu Rudainah warned in a press release that the circle of violence
might worsen as long as the offensive continues, especially after the seizure of
two Israeli soldiers by Lebanon's Hizbollah militia Wednesday morning.
The peace "could only be achieved within an international conference based on
negotiations and international resolutions," said Abu Rudainah.
He noted that "we have often demanded the release of Arab and Palestinian
prisoners from Israeli jails and we asked to include this demand as a basic part
of the peace requirements."
All sorts of the Israeli offensive "will only lead to reactions that the
military escalation will not tackle," the spokesman stressed.
On June 25, Palestinian militant groups seized an Israeli soldier Galid
Shalit in a cross-border attack, demanding Israel release Palestinian prisoners
in its jails to get back the captive soldier.
As Israel was exerting efforts to free Shalit by pressing a large-scale
ground and air operation into the Gaza strip, Lebanese Hizbollah claimed on
Wednesday that it had kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, also demanding Israel
release prisoners held in Israeli jails in exchange for the hostages.
